Anger Management Training Helps You Manage Anger Emotion
Anger is a natural
emotion that all
humans share--even
the most spiritual
among us. Frequent
bouts of anger can
allude to larger
emotional issues,
which can be
overcome and healed
with therapy. Anger
management problems
can be curbed with
time, diligence and
support, but first
they must be
identified.
▪
Physical Cues
Some physical cues
that you may notice
in yourself could
signal a potential
problem with anger
management. If you
are easily incensed
during a
conversation, you
will feel your
muscles tense up and
your heart start to
race. You may also
find yourself
raising your voice,
pacing the room,
screaming, crying or
shaking. These are
all signs that your
body is reacting to
your emotions and an
indication that your
emotions are quickly
getting out of
hand.
▪
Frequency
Observe whether you
are frequently
getting angry over
innocent
conversations and
what it is that is
sparking the anger.
Do you often feel as
if other people are
treating you
unfairly? If you
have a problem
controlling your
anger, small issues
will suddenly
develop into big
arguments, and
benign discussions
can seem like
they're spiraling
out of control for
no reason.
▪
Incoherence
Ask yourself during
arguments if you're
speaking coherently.
A common warning
sign is that a
person can't control
his thoughts during
an argument or form
rational sentences.
Another warning sign
is having trouble
calming yourself
down during a
dispute.
▪
Physical Reactions
People with anger
management problems
often need to act
out physically when
their anger
escalates out of
control. This may
entail anything from
hitting a tree,
pushing another
person or running
away from the
argument. Other
related warning
signs are public
altercations with
strangers, such as
bar fights, or cases
in which the
individual destroys
public property.
▪
Effects on Life
Anger management
issues can manifest
in a variety of ways
in a person's life.
An individual may
rely heavily on
alcoholic substances
and develop drug
habits as a result
of his inability to
cope with anger.
Anger management
problems can result
in frequent trouble
with the law, with
keeping a job and
with personal
relationships.
▪
Short-Term
Solution
If you feel yourself
getting angry to the
point that you feel
out of control, try
to breathe deeply.
Before you go any
further with the
argument, breathe in
from your diaphragm,
letting the air
completely fill your
lungs, and then let
all the air go. Try
to breathe deeply
several times in a
row; this technique
will help you calm
down physically and
mentally.
▪
Intervention and
Therapy
If you are engaged
in an argument with
a person you suspect
may have anger
management problems,
wait until he has
calmed down. He may
be unaware of how
his anger is
affecting himself
and the people in
his life. Create a
gentle intervention,
proposing anger
management
counseling. If you
think that you may
have an anger
management problem
yourself, seeking
out an anger
management group or
counselor is the
best first step
toward discovering
the reasons behind
the problem and
seeking solutions.
